TEN YOUNG TALENTS IN LAUSANNE

The activities of the Montreux Jazz Academy will for the first time be centralized in the facilities of the University of Music Lausanne (HEMU) and of the École de Jazz et de Musique Actuelle (EJMA), in a location that is both steeped in learning and bubbling with music, a perfect fit with the philosophy of the Montreux Jazz Artists Foundation.

Ten young talents will bring together their multiple influences during this week of exchanges and learning. A participant will be selected among the students of the HEMU and will join the nine finalists from the piano, guitar, and voice competitions at the 50th Montreux Jazz Festival. The three victors from the competitions will of course be present: Finnish guitarist Olli Hirvonen, American pianist Esteban Castro, and Latvian vocalist Arta Jekabsone.

JOIN THE ACADEMY

This year marks the arrival of two major new mentors! Bassist Marcus Miller and percussionist Trilok Gurtu, who have played with the biggest names in jazz and pop music, will bring to the young talents their open minds, their gift for composition, and their extraordinary sense of rhythm. Already present during the preceding edition, musical director Yaron HermanAl JarreauZiv Ravitz, and Kurt Rosenwinkel will once again pass on their inestimable experience to the next generation of jazz.

For its third edition, from 3 to 10 March 2017, the Montreux Jazz Academy will host ten talented young musicians in the vibrant Flon area of Lausanne. The public will be able to enjoy the event free of charge through concerts, jam sessions, and workshops featuring the Academy's prestigious mentors: Yaron Herman (musical director), Trilok Gurtu, Elina Duni, Marcus Miller, Ziv Ravitz, and Kurt Rosenwinkel.

FREE PROGRAM IN 4 ACTS

The public is also invited to the party! the Montreux Jazz Academy offers the public a rich and extremely engaging lineup of free program. This will unfold in four parts each day:

  • 5pm : A workshop will be presented by an Academy mentor or by an invited guest, like film music composer John Altman
  • 6pm: Montreux concerts by artists like Nina Simone, Ray Charles, or Marvin Gaye will be brought back to life in an archive concert screening
  • 8pm : a thematic concert will be held based on a different style (funk, Latino, electro...)
  • 9pm : Jam sessions after the concert

10 young participants, aged from 14 to 29, are all finalists from the piano, guitar, and voice competitions at the 50th Montreux Jazz Festival. The 10th participant has been selected among the HEMU students.

EXCEPTIONAL CONCERT AT BCV CONCERT HALL - LAUSANNE

The closing concert of the Montreux Jazz Academy will be on March 10th. Enriched by a week of musical encounters, the young virtuosos will present their sparkling talent and their different sensibilities, and will be joined on stage by their mentors: Trilok Gurtu, Yaron Herman, Elina Duni, Marcus Miller, Ziv Ravitz et Kurt Rosenwinkel. This evening, the sole ticketed Academy event, will take place in the excellent acoustics of the HEMU’s BCV Concert Hall in Lausanne.
